Most people I know are afraid of computers and all the cool things you find on the Internet. Why? Because computers are so complicated to use that they make them feel stupid. I found this post – Design Principles to Live By: Technology Serves Human - that deals with that question. In a nutshell, if a site or a computer program makes you feel stupid that site or program is badly designed.
If you want those uncomfortable with technology to get in you need to make it approachable. As I mentioned last Friday, there are simpler blogs like Tumblr, and more complex ones like WordPress. WordPress is great, and I love it, but for four students going on an exchange to Europe I set them up on Tumblr. It’s simple, easy and fairly elegant. It’s a great entry point for those intimidated by blogging.
Technology shouldn’t make you feel like a moron. That’s just not good.
