In the past couple of decades, more and more students with greater and greater reading difficulties have been “mainstreamed” into the class with other students with higher reading levels.
This has created difficulty for a lot of English teachers because they’re still expected to read, discuss and analyze some fairly sophisticated literature even though a fair number of the their students can’t actually read it.
What do you do about it? A lot of teachers have restorted to audiobooks; books on tape, CD or mp3. That way the student can listen to the book even if his reading level is weak.
Of course, this can cost a fair amount of money to buy. However, LoudLit has over 30 (and counting!) public domain titles available for downloading in mp3 format at a price you can live with: Free.
It’s not a complete solution to dealing with students with wildly varying reading levels, but it might help.
