I am in agreement that cell phones should be used in class . Phone have som many applications that can be used in a variety of setting. There are math applications , search capabilities, and so much more. Plus we would be utilizing a technology the students know and like

Impressive - Fun idea, doing video games, and clever to connect them all. If RP does a YouTube contest again, I should use this one as an example of a simple idea well executed.

We don't have 1-1 laptops, but I did have excellent access to our computer labs during this time period. That solved that problem.
The kids grouped themselves. That, naturally, leads to more supervision problems, but it made it a lot easier for the kids to accomplish the task since the louder kids tended to group themselves together, and the more musical ones hung together. They put themselves in groups where they felt comfortable taking risks with their group members.
As far as I know, this was the kids' first experience with Audacity. Most of them have worked with Movie Maker last year and many of the processes are similar. They took to Audacity readily. It's that old "digital native" thing in action again.

Thanks for sharing what you learned. I'm curious about your school setup? Are you in 1-1 laptop school? How did you group the students? Did the kids have experience with Audacity before this?

I agree that we as educators should set an example of professionalism and safety in this area. I came across this article the other day that talks about the psychological features of cyberspace that might help understand what happens when we're online. http://www-usr.rider.edu/~suler/psycyber/basicfeat.html

I could see an interesting discussion coming out of it with the right group of students.

I faced this in leading a session on how to run classroom discussion. I sat down in front of Powerpoint when it occurred to me that it was absurd to lecture or present on class discussion. So I redid it as a guided discussion about discussion. I can then use examples from the session I'm running to demonstrate how to run discussion. But let's face it, a simple lecture/Powerpoint presentation is just so much easier to do, which is why we fall back to it.
