One word at a time
One Word is a funky little site that encourages stream of conciousness writing. What the site does is it prompts you with one word and you are supposed to write about that word for a minute. Then you hit submit and it posts your writing.
That’s all there is to it. While it’s pretty simple, this could be an offbeat way to promote a little creative thinking. It could also help people get past writer’s block.
Since it posts your results, if you did this with a class it would be fun to compare the results. You could run a contest. Who can write the most? Who can write the most that makes sense?
The only thing you might want to watch out for is that some of the small links at the bottom of the page. Some of them lead to some philosophically odd places that you might not be comfortable with, or might not feel comfortable having your students look at.

I tried this site out this morning. It was pretty neat. But one of the poems linked with mine (common theme) had a whole buncha swear words. I didn’t mind, but I would not want kids to be viewing it.

I know what you’re saying. Some of the coolest sites on the Net are messed up by that kind of thing.
